Home/Treatment Programs/Intensive Outpatient (IOP)

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)

Structured addiction treatment with flexibility. Attend therapy 9-12 hours per week while living at home and maintaining your responsibilities.

What Is Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)?

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) provide structured, comprehensive treatment while allowing you to live at home. You attend therapy sessions 3-4 days per week for 3-4 hours each session (typically 9-12 hours total weekly). IOP offers more support than standard outpatient care but doesn't require residential stay.

What to Expect

  • 9-12 hours of treatment per week
  • Group therapy and education sessions
  • Individual counseling sessions
  • Evidence-based therapies (CBT, DBT, etc.)
  • Relapse prevention planning
  • Evening/weekend sessions often available

Who It's For

  • Moderate addiction severity
  • Step-down from inpatient or PHP
  • Stable living environment
  • Committed to recovery
  • Need structure but can't leave work/family

IOP vs. Standard Outpatient

The main difference is intensity. Standard outpatient might be 1-2 hours per week, while IOP is 9-12 hours spread across multiple days. IOP provides more structure, accountability, and peer support—critical during early recovery or the transition from residential treatment.

Duration and Schedule

Most IOP programs last 8-12 weeks, though some continue longer based on individual progress. Sessions are often scheduled in the evening (6-9 PM) or on weekends to accommodate work and school schedules. This flexibility makes IOP accessible for people who need intensive support but can't take time away from responsibilities.

Perfect Middle Ground

IOP strikes a balance between flexibility and structure. You get the intensive support needed for recovery while staying connected to your life, job, and family. It's often the sweet spot for people serious about recovery who have responsibilities they can't abandon.
